RICHARD REDDING ANTIQUES

A very rare and small sized Louis XV gilt bronze cartel clock of fourteen day duration, signed on the white enamel dial by the eminent clockmaker Julien Le Roy, with inner Roman and outer Arabic numerals and a fine pair of pierced gilt brass hands for the hours and minutes. The movement with anchor escapement, striking on the hour and half hour on a single bell. The fine gilt bronze case stamped with C-couronné poinçon, of foliate cartouche outline surmounted by a scrolled ribbon with a scrolled and cartouche terminal centred by a scallop shell motif
Paris, dated 1745-9
Height 25 cm, width 18 cm.
The C-couronné poinçon stamp dates the work between March 1745 and February 1749, corresponding with an edict that all bronzes were to be struck with the mark as visible proof that duty had been paid to the crown. Other cartel clocks by the celebrated Parisian maître-horloger Julien Le Roy (1686-1759) can be found in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the J. Paul Getty Museum, California and Nationalmuseet, Stockholm.
