Léonard Boudin (1735-1807) is celebrated for his remarkably accomplished, innovative and dramatic marquetry – a skill he most likely acquired when working for Pierre Migeon II (1701-58), during his early career. Boudin later practised as a marchand-ébéniste, retailing both his own works and those by fellow colleagues. Floral, figurative and parquetry inlays were among his specialities. Among other related Transition commodes from his oeuvre is one ornamented solely with parquetry and trellis patterns and another with an urn and floral-filled basket, illustrated respectively in Pierre Kjellberg, “Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle”, 1998, pp. 92 and 97, pl. A. For more information on Boudin’s career and work, see p. ?? (old no 93).
