A very fine Louis XVI silver coffee-pot by Antoine-Joseph-Albert Desruesne Valenciennes with pear shaped body supported on three feet with classical vase motifs and ebonised handle Valenciennes, France, dated 1786 Fully hallmarked. Height 30 cm. Although coffee was introduced into Europe during the sixteenth century, like tea it was initially only used for medicinal purposes. It did not become really fashionable until the eighteenth century when it was introduced into the home. As it was in such short supply it was very much a luxury item and was thus only appreciated by the most affluent members of society who would drink it at small social gatherings.
