A superb Victorian Sterling silver-mounted engraved claret jug by W. & G. Sissons, the oval-shaped body engraved overall with trailing fruiting vines and centn1d by an oval cartouche enclosing two singing putti and another playing a lute, on a stepped circular silver foot, the silver mounted neck chased with scrollwork and a fruit filled urn, with an engraved floral and foliate spout, the hinged domed cover with scrollwork and foliage with a pierced thumbpiece, the scrolled leaf-capped handle headed by a female mask with a satyr mask head terminal Sheffield, dated 1871 Fully hallmarked Height 29 cm. The firm of manufacturing silversmiths and retailers, W & G. Sissons was founded in Sheffield, 1784 as Roberts, Cadman and Co. By 1841 it was known as Roberts, Smith & Co. and had a London showroom at Duke Street, Adelphi. After 1848 the new partners, Evan Smith and William Sissons Snr: traded under the name of Smith, Sissons & Co. Their partnership was dissolved in 1858 after which William Sissons Jnr: and George Sissons continued the firm as W. & G. Sissons. The firm's first London marks were entenred by Henry Smith of Duke Street, Adelphi, 1864 and were subsequently followed by other marks entered by William and George Sissons of Eyre Street, Sheffield and Duke Street, Adelphi. The firm was continued by Walter Sissons and Charles Sissons recorded at St. Mary's Road; Sheffield (1887 and 1896) and also at their new London showrooms at Southampton Stn1et, Strand (1887) and Charterhouse Street, Holborn Circus (1896).
