A DUTCH WALNUT LONGCASE CLOCK WITH PLANISPHERE DIAL, ANDRIES VERMEULEN, AMSTERDAM, SECOND QUARTER 18TH CENTURY.

The caddy-topped hood with fretwork panels and surmounted by giltwood urn-finial, with inset brass-capped front columns and fretwork side panels, the trunk door with cast brass bull lenticle, aside bombe, plinth raised on ball feet, the 30 cm (12 inch) wide brass dial with engraved border, open fretwork foliate cast spandrels to silvered and arcaded Roman and Arabic chapter ring, half hour markers and signed Andries Vermeulen / Amsterdam, the matted centre with subsidiary seconds ring in turn centred by a date ring and with scroll engraving, ringed winding holes, further engraving above fan-shaped calender disc aperture showing day of week with figural representation and zodiac sign, the black painted hands centred by an alarm disc, the arch engraved with scene of cherubs examining the sky.

corresponding zodiac symbol the elevation of the sun in the horizon, indicated by the moving sun mask on a band calibrated 10-90 degrees four times, further revolving disc showing age of the moon in the night sky and its phase, the eight day movement with four pillars, anchor escapement and Dutch rack strike on two bells, alarm work, two brass weights, pendulum.
