On this day the third of
Septemb’ 1657 appeared before me Josua de Putter public notary admitted
by the Court of Holland, living in The Hague and the witnesses hereafter
named, The Honourable Salomon Coster Mr. Watch maker also living here on
the one side. And John Fromanteel, journeyman in the same handicraft on
the other side. And declared they appearers to have agreed and accorded
with each other like they agree and accord here in manners hereafter
declared. Viz. that he John Fromanteel obliges and commits himself to
execute and perfect his watchwork, in the shop or in the house of
aforementioned Coster, from this day of this act until Mayday 1658 now
coming ^ like he fromanteel already has made some; and that on
conditions hereafter declared, that is, when by him Fromanteel a piece
of work will be wrought for each piece being of brass and steel
therefore he Coster will pay him a sum of twenty car: guild. And if the
aforementioned brass and steel will be delivered by the aforementioned
Salomon Coster himself, then he Fromanteeel therefore will enjoy no more
as 18-10-0, |

Op huijden den derden September
1657 compareerde voor mij Josua de putter openbaer notaris bij den Hove
van Hollandt geadmitteert in s’Gravenhage residerende ende de getuygen
naer genoempt, D’Eersame Salomon Coster Meester orilogie maecker mede
woonende alhier Ter eenre. Ende John Fromanteel meester knecht int selve
hantwerck ter andere zijde Ende verclaerden Zijluyden comparanten
metteranderen verdragen ende geaccordeert te sijn gelijck sij verdrogen
en accordeeren bij desen in manieren hier naer vertclaert. Te weten dat
hij John Froman- teel sich verobligeert ende verbint omme sijn orlogie
werck op den winckel ofte ter huijse van voors Coster van huijden date
deses act tot meydage 1658 nu toecomende te sullen voltrecken ende
volmaecken gelijck hij fromanteel alreeds eenige gemaeckt heeft ende dit
op conditien hierna verclaert, dat is, wanneer bij hem fromanteel een
stuck werck sal sijn volwrocht voor yder stuck van seijl cooper ende
stael ??? daervooren hij, Coster hem sal betalen een somme van twintich
carolus gulden. Ende indien het voor gemelte zeijl cooper ende stael bij
den voorsz. Salomon Coster selver sal worden gelevert hij fromanteel
alsdan daervoor niet meer en sal genieten als 18-10-0, Nochtants met dien
verstande dat hij Coster geduyrende de voorsz. tijt den voorsz. John
fromanteel sal indemneren ende vrijhouden van bier vier ende licht.

Today, on the third of September appeared before me, Josua de Putter,
notary public, admitted by the court of Holland, living in The Hague, as
well as witnesses to be specified, the honourable Salomon Coster, master
clockmaker also of this city on the one hand. And John Fromanteel
journeyman of the same trade on the other And declared the contractants
together to be in agreement and accordance as they agreed and accorded
herewith in manners to be specified below. To wit that he John
Fromanteel shall oblige and bind himself to perform and finish his clock
making work in the shop or the house of the aforementioned Coster from
the present date of this deed until may day 1658 now forthcoming just as
he Fromanteel has already made some and this on condition to be
specified hereafter, that is, when a piece shall be completed by him
Fromanteel for every piece the brass and steel required for it Coster
shall pay him a sum of twenty carolus guilders. And if the
aforementioned brass and steel shall be provided by the aforementioned
Coster he Fromanteel will not enjoy then more than 18-10-0, Nevertheless
provided that he Coster during the aforementioned time shall indemnify
the aforementioned John Fromanteel

1971 as a mechanical engineer, acquired an MA in English language and
literature at the Free University of Amsterdam (1979), became a lecturer
at Leiden University, the Free University and Delft University
respectively, and at various teaching training colleges specialising in
Old and Middle English Language and Literature (1979-1984); worked for
the European Commission, first as a translator, later as a language
coordinator. Got involved in antique clocks in 1985 and was trained as a
restorer in the workshop of Mario Crijns. 'Wim' was the editor of the
